185 more cats surrendered than last year, Calgary Humane says economic downturn to blame

The Calgary Humane Society is holding an emergency two-day adoption blitz after being inundated with cats and kittens.

The shelter says it has been extremely busy so far this year, taking in 185 more cats than in the same time period last year.

More than 60 cats are availablefor immediate adoption, said spokeswoman SagePullen-McIntosh.

"We havequite a few cats that are ready to go. We have a lot of different personalities and lots of different cats that would fit with different types of homes, sothere is quite a few for people to choose from."

Pullen-McIntoshsays the economy is playing a role, as many of the cats are being surrendered or abandoned by their owners.

"We saw it last year with definitely more animals coming through our shelter," she says. "[It was a] large increase overall in the animals that came to our shelter, specifically cats. But this year, we're seeing an even greater impact."

The blitz starts at noon today, with adoptions by donation.
