Christopher Lloyd, the actor who played Emmett "Doc" Brown in the Back to the Future movie trilogy, says sometimes he gets as much from fans as he gives.

"People come up and they have stories to tell," Lloyd told The Homestretch on Friday, of fan interactions at comic expos.

"They want you to sign this and that. They're just excited about meeting the actor. It's contagious and I find myself getting caught up in their stories. I love doing that. They will say, 'Mr. Lloyd, you were my childhood.' They may have grown up in troubled circumstances and Back to the Future was a positive refuge for them."

And the 79-year-old will have that chance again this weekend at the Calgary Comic and Entertainment Expo.

His exposchedule includes a reunion Friday night with fellow Future actors Lea Thompson and Tom Wilson at 7 p.m.

"Most of us just hoped we'd have a great opening and a good run and we did," Lloyd said of initial expectations of the first film.

"It hasn't aged. Young people who see it for the first time are as enthralled young people who saw it for the first in 1985. It has a long shelf life. It has meant a lot to many people for different reasons all over the globe. It's hung in there."

Lloyd says it was the scientist in the Doc Brown character that drew him in.

"I've always been fascinated by real scientists. Albert Einstein, Isaac Newton, and so many others. How they've come up with solutions to very complicated problems that nobody else can seem to figure out. Doc Brown had a feverous imagination. He was constantly coming up with new ways and solutions to various issues and time travel was one of them. I was just very inspired by being able to portray somebody of that sort. He's a man of tremendous energy and excitement about discovery."

Christopher Lloyd says he instantly had chemistry with fellow actor Michael J. Fox working on the Back to the Future trilogy. (Universal Pictures Home Entertainment/The Associated Press)

And Lloyd says working with Michael J. Fox was magical.

"The first day Michael came on the set and we started shooting, the chemistry was just there. Something clicked between us and it never stopped," Lloyd said.

"When we were on the set and the camera rolled, it was Doc and Marty."
