The City of Calgary is considering limiting the number of bars and pubs along 17th Avenue S.W.

Ald. John Mar says theres been an increase in complaints from residents who say noise, violence and vandalism is on the rise.

"Something needs to be done to ensure the safety of the patrons, but make sure the character and area of 17th Avenue does not change," Mar said.

One restaurant owner hopes the popular strip will become known for the food, and not the place to party.

"We want to be a part of changing the identity on 17th Ave. as a place to go for entertainment, but more food-related entertainment," said Stephen Hamelin, manager of Cibo restaurant.

The president of the Beltline Community Association says his group isn't against a thriving downtown scene, they just want to see a bit more balance along the strip.

"There are certainly concerns. There are those who are hyper-concerned. But on the other side of the coin there are those who enjoy the nightlife opportunities in Beltline," said Rob Taylor.

Mar says the city administration wants less than 50 per cent of each block on 17th Avenue designated for bars.
