Expect lane closures and slowdowns as Crowchild Trail construction expands

Commuters who use parts of Crowchild Trail should get ready for a summer of slowing down.

The upgrade work is ramping up again, this time adding a northbound lane from Memorial Drive to Fifth Avenue N.W.

Project engineer Jeff Baird says they are trying to get the work done quickly, so crews will work through the night.

"It'll be disruptive," Baird said.

"Slow down, a 50 km/h speed limit will be enforced 24/7. We will still be keeping the lanes open between 5 a.m. and 9 p.m. during the week. It will be busy, there will be workers on site and there will be photo radar on site."

He says work will proceed in a handful of areas.

"Similar to the work that's been going on through the winter, this will include nighttime construction," Baird said.

"The work zone will be starting at Fifth Avenue continuing onto the south limit which is south of Bow Trail. We will also be completing the West Hillhurst pathway and crossing across Parkdale Boulevard to connect to the Bow River pathway system. Work will continue to ramp up on the bridges, there will be more activity on the bridge surfaces themselves."

This phase of work starts next week and should be finished later this year.
