Boy, 9, dead after UTV collides on with SUV on rural Alberta highway

A nine-year-old boy is dead and a teenagerin hospital after the utility taskvehicle(UTV) they were driving collidedwith an SUVin rural Alberta on Thursday night.

A nine-year-old boy is dead and a teenagerin hospital after the utility taskvehicle(UTV) they were driving collidedwith an SUVin rural Alberta on Thursday night.

Airdrie RCMPsaid Friday that they were called to an accidentat the intersection of Highway 575 and Range Road 264 which is about 60 kilometres northeast of Calgary around 6 p.m. on Thursday.

A preliminary investigation showed that theUTV, also called a side-by-side, was travelling southboundon Range Road 264 when it entered Highway 575 and struck an eastbound SUV, the Mounties said.

One of the occupants ofthe side-by side, a 14-year-old boy,suffered serious, non-life threatening injuries and was flown by STARS air ambulance to a Calgary hospital.

The accident occurredat the intersection of Highway 575 and Range Road 264 about six kilometres west of Acme, Alta. around 6 p.m. on Thursday.

The nine-year-old boywas declared deceased at the scene.

According to RCMP, both are from Rocky View County.

The 29-year-old man who wasdrivingthe SUV from KneehillCounty had no injuries.

The Acme Fire Department, EMS and Kneehill County Bylaw assisted at the scene, about six kilometres west of Acme. AnRCMP collision analyst attended to assist in the investigation.

RCMP said the name of the deceased will not be released and no further updates are anticipated.
