A Canada-wide warrant has been issued for a Calgary man convicted of stabbing his best friend to death a decade ago and then dismembering his body to hide the evidence.

Dean Commanda began serving a nine-year, six-month sentence in February 2007.

He had been convicted in the manslaughter death of 22-year-old Chad Largy.

Commanda was also convicted of indignity to a dead body and assault with a weapon.

He was granted statutory release last November.

Corrections Canada says a warrant has been issued for Commanda's apprehension and the suspension of his release, but did not release any further details on the case.

It says there are three reasons why a Canada-wide warrant would be issued:

  • Breach of parole conditions
  • To prevent a breach of parole conditions
  • For public safety
