Douglas James Churchill ID'd as Golden avalanche victim

Douglas James Churchill is the 64-year-old Canmore man who died in an avalanche northwest of Golden, B.C. on Feb. 21.

Douglas James Churchill is the 64-year-old Canmore man who died in an avalanche northwest of Golden, B.C., on Feb. 21,BC Coroners Service said in a release Wednesday.

Churchillwas one of two skiers critically injured of seven that were sent to various hospitals for treatment after the avalancheonEsplanade Mountain.

He was taken to Golden hospital and then airlifted to Calgary but died Feb. 24 ofhis injuries.

It was a deadly weekend in the region.

Nick Roberts, a 30-year-old member of the Calgary Fire Department, died one day earlier, Feb. 20,in a separateavalanche in the East Quartz Creek area, also in the Golden area.
