Suspected drunk driver stopped by police on highway closed for Tour of Alberta

A driver with a blood alcohol reading nearly double the legal limit was pulled over and arrested after he was caught travelling on a highway west of Calgary that had been closed to traffic for the Tour of Alberta.

RCMP were doing traffic control on Highway 1A west of Cochrane for the bike race on Sept. 2 when officers saw the vehicle going west on the closed route.

Officers stopped the vehicle and found the driver along with his 19-year-old and 16-year-old male passengers were all very intoxicated, RCMP said.

The 19-year-old driver from the Stoney Nakoda First Nation was taken to the RCMP detachment in Cochrane to provide a breath sample. He was charged with impaired driving.
