Road rage suspected in rollover that killed young driver, injured 2 others

Calgary police are looking for two people who fled the scene of a possible road-rage incident after two vehicles collided early Wednesday, causing a rollover that killed one young male and badly injured two others.

It happened on southbound52nd Street at 16th Avenue N.E. on Wednesday around 2:40 a.m., the Calgary Police Service said.

A 2010 Dodge Journey, traveling at a high rate of speed on southbound 52nd Street, close to the interchange with 16th Avenue N.E., was struck from behind by a 2008 Buick Allure, police said in a release.

The Dodgecrossed over the centre median and one male youth believed to be the driver was ejected from the vehicle. He was pronounced deceased at the scene.

The two passengers, also young males, were injured.

They were transported to Alberta Children's Hospital by EMS and were in stable, non-life threatening condition, said EMS spokesperson Shane Paton.

He said he could not confirm their ages.

Witnesses told police it appeared that the two vehicles had been racing and then collided, causing one vehicle to spin out and roll over.

Sgt. Colin Foster says police cannot yet say whether street racing was involved.

"All I can say at the moment is it appears to be some form of road rage," he said.

"Speed is a factor. How fast? I don't know, we're still trying to determine that."

The Buick remained on scene for a short time before fleeing, police said. It was later located unoccupied in the Saddletowne area.

"It appears that the other vehicle stopped, they may have got out of the vehicle, and we're obviously quite keen to try and find out those circumstances," Fostersaid.

"Now we do have a vehicle or we have found a vehicle that we believe was connected to the collision," he said, adding that police are still seeking witnesses.

"Anybody who saw anybody walking around or running away from a four-door silver vehicle with a black hood please contact police and help us with what's actually been quite a tragic day."
