Two people were killed overnight in a southwest Calgary house fire.

Crews arrived at a home in the 2800 block of41st Street southwest in Glenbrook just after midnight and found heavysmoke coming from abasement window, the fire department said in a release.

A neighbour who called in the fire had dragged one person outside and started CPR.

Two other residents got out on their own.

Fire crews found a fourth person in the basement who was handed over to medical crews. AHS confirmed that two of the occupants succumbed to their injuries while the two other occupants were assessed and released on scene.

"It's always very tragic when when someone loses their life in a house fire, a place where they feel most comfortable, they're very familiar," said Carole Henke, spokesperson for the firedepartment.

"We do know that it started in the basement in approximately the living room area."

Investigators are working to determine the cause of the fire.
