Calgary Zoo officials say their first attempt at breeding penguins hasn't worked.

In September, one of the penguins laid an egg.A few days ago, keepers saw that penguin moving around. The egg fell off her feet, cracked and was knocked into a pool.

When zoo keepers retrieved it they discovered the egg had never been viable, but officials say this is a positive first step towards successful breeding behaviour.

The zoo's Penguin Plunge opened in February. It features 46 of the flightless birds in a $24.5-million complex located just inside the main entrance of the zoo.
