Four temporary drop-in clinics where Calgarians can receive free-of-charge flu shots opened across the city on Monday.

The mass immunization sites open seasonally every year. This year theyare located at:

  • South Calgary Health Centre at 31 Sunpark Plaza S.E.
  • Richmond Road Diagnostic Treatment Centre at 302-1820 Richmond Rd. S.W.
  • Northgate at A154-495 36th St. N.E.
  • Brentwood Village Mall at 3630 Brentwood Rd. N.W.

The flu vaccine has been available in Calgary pharmacies and doctors' offices since mid-October.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, said at a news conferencethat the flu's arrival in Australia earlier this year has Alberta Health Services preparing for a potential early-onset of the virus.

"[Australia] had an early flu season, but not a severe one," said Hinshaw. "Even though we look to Australia as a predictor of some seasons, it's not a guarantee."

AHSstrongly suggests that thosewithweakened immune systems should be vigilant about getting the flu shot. That includes the elderly, who are more likely to be affected by influenza.

For information about the flu vaccine, call Health Link at 811 or go to ahs.ca/influenza.
