Police investigating after 1 man killed in Forest Lawn shooting

Calgary police are investigating after an early morning shooting in the southeast community of Forest Lawn killed one man and injured another.

Calgary police are investigating after an early morning shooting in the southeast community of Forest Lawn killed one man and injured another.

Police were called at approximately 2:50 a.m. Saturday after receiving reports that two groups of males were involved in a shooting in Forest Lawn.

"The [two groups]were definitely shooting at each other," said Sgt.Jim Dalidowiczwith Calgary police.

Calgary police said that the shooting took place outside of the Portico Hookah Lounge, located at 1806 35 Street S.E. It's believed by police that two groups of males became involved in an argument inside the lounge and were asked to leave.

After leaving the lounge, the argument became more involved and the shooting took place. After the shooting, one of the vehicles attempted to drive to the hospital and got into a collision, Dalidowicz said.

Officers discovered a man had driven his vehicle into a barricade near a Calgary Transit station located at 36 Street and 26 Avenue N.E. He was transported to hospital and eventually died as a result of his gunshot wounds.

Another man who police now believe was an innocent bystander was struck by a stray bullet at the time of the shooting. He was transported to hospital and is in stable condition.

Dalidowicz saidanyone with information about the shooting shouldcontact police, and residents and businesses in the Forest Lawn area should check their cars and buildings for bullet holes and casings or related damage.

Police are now seeking help from the public to identify a suspect, who is described as a Black man with short black hair with a Gucci shoulder bag.

Clarifications

  • Police initially said that the two men hit by bullets were in one vehicle, but a subsequent police news release clarified that the second man is now believed to be an innocent bystander.
