Brother of Calgary Stampeder's killer charged with murder in Forest Lawn shooting

Calgary police have charged a man with second-degree murder in a shooting in the southeast community of Forest Lawn that killed one man and injured another.

Calgary police have chargeda man with second-degree murder in a Forest Lawn shootingthat killed one man and injured another.

On Monday, police arrestedSamuel Lugela, 28, of Calgary, at a homein downtown Calgary on a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder.

The accused is the older brother of Nelson Lugela, who was convicted last year of second-degree murder in thekilling of Calgary Stampeder Mylan Hicks. The family relationship was confirmed to CBC News byNelson Lugela's lawyer.

Nelson Lugelashot Hicks in 2016 after getting into an argument with the football player's teammates at the Marquee nightclub.

On Saturday, at approximately 2:50 a.m., police were calledafter receiving reports that two groupswere involved in a shooting in Forest Lawn.

Calgary police said the shooting took place outsidethe Portico Hookah Lounge, at 1806 35th Street S.E. Police believethe two groups of men became involved in an argument inside the lounge and were asked to leave.

After leaving the lounge, the argument became more intense and the shooting took place. After the gunfire, one of the shooting victims attempted to drive to the hospital but crashed his vehicle, police said.

Officers discovered theman had driveninto a barricade near the CTrainstation at 36th Street and 26th Avenue N.E. He was taken to hospital, where he died as a result of his gunshot wounds.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday, after which his identity will be released.

Another man who police say was initially believed to be abystander was also shot. He was taken to hospital and is in stable condition. Police are still working to determine his involvement.

Police said they arein the process of reviewing security camera footage of the incident and said additional charges are likely against others involved.

It's believed there are other witnesses to the confrontation who have yet to come forward, police said.
