Former Alberta MLA Raymond Reierson receives France's Legion d'Honneur

An Alberta veteran and former MLA received France's highest decoration, the Legion d'Honneur,on Saturday.

Raymond Reiersonwas a part of the artillery and reinforcement efforts during the invasion of Normandy. The battle led to the liberation of France and was the largest sea-born invasion in history but Reiersonwasn't being honoured just for his part in the battle.

"He's had a life of service and dedication and he's good at it," said Russel Whitford, who works with the St. Paul, Alta., Legion and nominated Reierson for the award. "We're very proud of him and all that he's accomplished."

Reiersonserved as the MLA for St. Paul and as a cabinet minister over the course of his 20-year political career.

He received the award in the Alberta Legislature where he spent so much timeand says for someone who fought for democracy and was elected through the process, it means a lot.
