One of two men injured in a shooting near the Westside Recreation Centre in southwest Calgary early Wednesday morning is known to the gang unit investigators, said police.

Police said they responded to reports of shots fired at about 2:50 a.m. When they arrived, they found at least a dozen shell casings littering the southbound turning lane of 17th Avenue at 69th Street.

A short time later, two men arrived at the Rockyview Hospital with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

Investigators examined a white BMW parked in the hospital lot before towing it away. At least a dozen bullet holes could be seen in the car's windshield and the driver's side window and door. Blood was also visible on the front passenger door.

Policesaid the gang unit has been called in to assist in the case, but acting Staff Sgt. Gord Eiriksson did not call it a gang-related shooting.

"We know that one of the individuals that was injured this morning is known to the gang enforcement team and we can't say that there is any actual gang involvement with this actual shooting," he said.
