Teen accused of shooting German tourist in head seeking bail

The teenage boy accused of shooting a German tourist in the head wants to be released from jail while he awaits trial. A bail hearing will take place next month for the teen.

The teenage boy accused of shooting a German tourist in the head wants to be released from jail while he awaits trial.

A bail hearing will take place next month for the teen, who can't be identified in order to comply with the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Defence lawyer Balfour Der represents the16-year-old, who is facing a charge of attempted murder plus 13 other charges.

On Aug. 2, Horst Stewin was driving east on Highway 1Awith his wife, son and son's girlfriend when he was shot in the head near the Morley rodeo grounds.

After two weeks in a Calgary hospital, the 60-year-old was flown to Germany, where doctors have since removed the bullet from his head.

The German consul in Calgary has previously said the victim's injuries are severe and life-changing.

Three weeks after the shooting, the teen was arrestedon the Stoney Nakoda First Nation.

Police have said the shooting appears to be random. The accused and victim did not know each other.

The bullet was sent back to Canada for forensic testing. Police want to know if it's a match to a firearm seized in the investigation.
