Falling glass from Brookfield Place shuts down Sixth Avenue S.W.

Glass crashing down on a car from the under-construction Brookfield Place in downtown Calgaryshut down Sixth Avenue S.W. on Monday afternoon.

"We received a call at 4 o'clock that there was glass that fell from the 33rd floor and thankfully did not injure anybody because that would have been really, really nasty," said Calgary Fire Department spokesperson Carol Henke.

Sixth Avenue S.W. wasclosed between First and Second Streets through the nightas crews waited for strong winds to subside.

"Public safety is our number one concern, so until we are absolutely certain that it is safe for people to be either walking or driving in the area, it will be shut down," said Henke.

"Right now it's incredibly windy right here on the main level, so imagine up there. They're just not able right now to put someone over the edge to secure the window, so it's still a risk."

Henke could not confirm how or why the glass on the tower broke but said a member of the safety response unit from the Calgary Building Services departmentwas on hand to investigate.

Brookfield Place is expected to be the tallest building in Calgary once completed.
