Golf dome collapses after heavy snowfall in Calgary

The Golf Dome in southeast Calgary collapsed on Tuesday evening, after a massive storm dumped as much as 30 centimetres of snow on parts of the city.

20-40 centimetres of snow had blanketed the city earlier Tuesday

The Golf Dome in southeast Calgary collapsed on Tuesday evening, after a massive storm dumped as much as 30 centimetres of snow on parts of the city.

Police received acall around 9:20p.m. from a neighbour who lives near the dome, which islocated at 50 50th Avenue S.E.

Calgary fire, EMS and police responded to the scene police say it didn't initially appear as if anyone was inside the dome at the time of the collapse.

EMS said they did not transport anyone to hospital.

Batt. chief Alistair Robin said part of the dome was still supported by its internal structure, so the owner of the business was able to go in and retrieve computer equipment.

It's not yet known if the cause of the collapse wasstructural failure due toheavy snowfall, after 20-40centimetres blanketed the city and surrounding areas, or related to the fans that are used to inflate the structure, Robin said.

Crews have shut off gas, water and electricity to the building and security is expected to stay on site through the night, until crews can take a better look in the morning, he said.

The National Golf Academy's website stated the dome was closed due to Alberta Health Services' restrictions intended to slow the spread of COVID-19.
