Gunshots in northeast Calgary Monday add to string of recent shootings

Shots were fired in the Calgary northeast neighbourhood of Pineridge Monday evening, on the same day that police warned about increased gun violence in the city.

Around 6:30 p.m. Monday, police responded to reports of three gunshots heard by people in the area around 56th Street and 23rd Avenue N.E., Staff Sgt.Keith Shufelttold CBC News.

Police believe two vehicles were involved in the shooting, including a grey Hyundai. Bullet casings were found at the scene, but no injuries have yet been reported, police said.

The investigation is ongoing, and police have not determined whether the incident was linked to organized crime. No suspects have been identified.

Number of shootings so far nearly double that of last year

The gunshots heard Monday night bringthe total number of shootings in the city up to 95 so far this year. Police said they are concerned about the city's increased level of gun violence in a Monday news release.

At this time last year, there were only54 reported shootings, the release said.

Calgary has seen a string of gun violence incidents in recent days.

On Sunday night, one man was wounded in a shooting inthe southeast neighbourhood ofPenbrooke Meadows. The victim has since been released from hospital, police said Monday. Police believe the incident was targeted and related to organized crime conflict.

Another fatal shooting in Radisson Heights occurred early Sunday morning, with the victim's autopsy scheduled for Wednesday.

Last Thursday, a 31-year-old woman was shot and killed in Evergreen. Another victim from that shooting remains in hospital instable condition, Monday's news release said.
