Thousands of Calgarians usually roll through Haunted Calgarys house of horrors at New Horizon's Mall each year. But with the pandemic, they are asking those looking for a scare to buckle up and drive on in.

Calgarians have shown their passion for all things Halloween this year by immediately snapping up all available tickets to the latest craze:drive-in attractions.

This year, one of the most popular to enter the scene is called the Devil's Drive-In. It's the COVID-friendly version of Haunted Calgary's usual haunted house.

"Because of COVID, we were very worried we wouldn't be able to open up at all we simply didn't feel safe putting through 5,000 people or more," said Christine Campbell, creative director of Haunted Calgary.

"We've completely pivoted and created this drive-in haunted attraction. It's a whole Halloween experience. It's a private, immersive theatrical production for you and the occupants in your vehicle."

Campbell says the scary experience is COVID safe, and the intense interest in tickets which sold out even with the addition of an extra show proves that you can't kill the Halloween spirit.

Attendees to the event, which takes place at the New Horizon Mall underground parkade, are encouraged to fill their cars with members of their cohort.

"We'll actually take your keys so there is no escape, and the show happens around the vehicle as opposed to people driving through," Campbell said. "In this way we felt we could be COVID safe as well as vehicle safe."

The experience lasts about seven minutes.

A portion of the profits from the event are donated to local charities.

Scarewash

Another drive-through horror experience that is new this year is the Scarewash, put on by Big Art and running Oct. 29-31.

It takes place at the 10th and 10th Car Wash (1104 10th Ave. S.W.) and is a drive-through car wash experience gone horribly wrong. The 10-minute experience ends with an actual car wash. But don't get too excited, even though the Scarewash added another night to the experience, it is also completely sold out.
