Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump sign worth $200K shot again

The welcomesign atHead-Smashed-In Buffalo Jumphas again been vandalized by someone with a firearm, according to police.

Someone shot holes in the sign welcoming visitors to the UNESCO World Heritage Site in southern Alberta, RCMP said on Thursday.

Police believe the shooting happened sometime between July 29 and Aug. 3.

It's the third time someone has shot the sign in the past two years, according to RCMP in nearby FortMacleod, who estimate the sign's value around $200,000.

Head-Smashed-In Buffalo Jump was used by Aboriginal people for more than 5,000 years to kill buffalo by driving them over a 10-metre cliff.

Located about 185 kilometres south of Calgary, it's one of the world's "oldest, largest, and best preserved buffalo jumps," according to Alberta Culture and Tourism.
