Heat warnings blanket much of Alberta

It could go north of 30 C in a lot of Alberta on Monday, prompting alerts from Environment Canada for the north, central, eastern and southern parts of the province.

"A ridge of high pressure continues to build over the Prairies. With this, a very warm air mass will produce daytime high temperatures near 30 C today and Tuesday. Temperatures are expected to cool off mid-week," the agency said Monday.

"This warning may be expanded further as the ridge strengthens."

Northern communities such as High Level, Rainbow Lake, Fort Vermilion,Fort Chipewyan and Wood Buffalo National Park are included in the warnings, working down the central and eastern part of the province to the southern border, includingLethbridge and Taber.

Calgary was spared as of 11:30 a.m., but the warnings are in effect for communities to the east of the city, including Brooks, Strathmore, Vulcan and others.

Calgary is expected to reach a high of 26 C on Mondaybut is forecast to hit 31 C on Tuesday.

"Extreme heat affects everyone," Environment Canada says.

"Residents of and visitors to the warned regions are advised to take precautions to protect themselves, their families and their neighbours."
