FOB gang member shot in southeast Calgary on way to court

Henry Le Nguyen's lawyer is raising concerns that someone was able to track the former FOB gang member's schedule before gunning him down in broad daylight as he headed to court Monday.

Henry LeNguyen's lawyer is raising concerns that someone was able to trackthe former FOB gang member'sschedule beforegunning himdown in broad daylight as he headed to court Monday.

He was shot several times including inthe stomach and foot butis in seriousbutstable condition in hospital, sources tell CBC News.

ToniiRoulstonsays her client hasstrict release conditions and wasunder 24-hour house arrest.

Hewas a member of one of Calgary's most violent criminalorganizations, andis the second FOB associate to be shot this summer.

Phillip Tu whospent time in prison for a multimillion-dollar ecstasy bust in2005was killed in Augustoutside his home.

Targeted attack

Nguyen, who is in his 20s,was on his way to court for a9:30 a.m.appearance on a charge ofconspiracy to commit murder.Healso faces several drug and weapons-related charges.

"Without being an investigator, it is evident that the perpetratorsutilized whatever opportunity they had to capitalize on Mr. Nguyenleaving his home and being subject to the condition to attend court,"saidRoulston.

Nguyenwasshot in the4500 block of Seventh Avenue S.E. around9:15 a.m.

Police believe the attack was targeted.

"It's a very brazen attack. It's very disconcerting for any neighbourhood in Calgaryto haveindividualsout shooting," saidStaff Sgt. PaulMagnus.

Past gang war

The FOB gang which initially stood for "Fresh Off the Boat" when itformed in the late 1990s has all but collapsed after a massivepolice crackdown that led to charges against five men.

A gang war between the FOBand the FK (FOB Killers) is connected to at least 25 deaths between 2002 and 2009.

While there are no deaths in today's shooting, agas meteron one of the houses was struck, which caused aleak.

The Calgary police guns andgangs unitis involved in theinvestigation.Police don't yet have any details on suspects or a suspect vehicle.

Roulston says she certainly has concerns for the safety of her client moving forward, but they will wait until more information is gathered on how to proceed in the future.
