High River RCMP arrest machete-wielding Calgary man after wild chase

A Calgary man is in custody in High River after leading RCMP on a wild chase through farmers' fields.

A Calgary man is in custody in High River after leading RCMP on a wild chase through farmers' fields.

Around 8 p.m. on April 1, RCMP received a call from a resident saying there was an unknown man standing in their front yard "holding alarge machetenear a white pickup truck," according to a press release.

Police arrived and ordered the machete-wieldingman out of thetruck at gun point, at which time he drove into a field.

The ensuing car chase lasted 20 minutes, during which time the stolen truck crashed through several farm fences, according to police. The truck then became stuck and the man fled on foot, but was promptly detained.

The 30-year-old suspectfaces a string of charges:

  • Two counts of assault with a weapon,
  • Possession of property obtained by crime
  • Flight from police
  • Mischief over $5,000
  • Impaired operation of a motor vehicle
  • Three counts of fail to comply with conditions of a recognizance

No one was injured in the pursuit.
