Homicide victim found in Blazer identified

Police say a man whose body was found in a SUV on the weekend is the city's 33rd homicide victim.

A man whose body was found in an SUV on the weekend is the city's 33rd homicide victim, police say.

On Wednesday, police identified the victim as Juan Carlos Dequina, 22.

His body wasfound inside a black, four-door Chevrolet Blazer near the intersection of 53rd Street and 146th Avenue S.W. at 3:40 a.m. on Sunday.

An autopsy has determined the cause of Dequina's death, but police aren't releasing any details.

Acting Staff Sgt. Rick Tuza said that Dequina was the eldest son from a good family, and that he lived at home.He was well thought of by his employer, and there is nothing to indicate his death had anything to do with gangs or drugs, Tuza said.

Tuza wouldn't say where in Calgary Dequina was last seen, only that it was somewhere in the northwest at about 1 a.m. on Sunday.

"That was the last time he was seen....He was heading down toward his residence, so the vehicle was recovered a short distance from his residence. We just don't know the circumstances as to how he ended up in that rural area."

Police said in a statement thatDequina's family "has asked for privacy as they grieve their loss."
