Calgary's Inglewood community has been named Canada's greatest neighbourhood in an annual contest put on by the country's city planners.

The Great Places competition is organized by the Canadian Institute of Planners and has run since 2010.

Inglewood beat out 10 other communities for the title, including Calgary's Kensingtonneighbourhood.

Other competitors in the greatest neighbourhood category were the QuartierPetit Champlain in Quebec, St. Boniface in Winnipeg, Old East Village in London, Ont.and the les de la Madeleine in Quebec.

Inglewood was selected based on planning excellence as judged by a panel of experts.

However, the community that received the most votes from Canadians was Old East Village in London, Ont.

In a press release, the contest organizers said Inglewood was chosen because "it is a great neighbourhood to visit but also, and perhaps most importantly, a great neighbourhood to live."

The judges cited the community's large, affordable housing stock, range of transportation options and support for community facilities and businesses in its decision.

It also highlighted the community's expression of local culture with night markets and celebration of local artisans.
