Airport regulation change could allow secondary suites in Inglewood

City of Calgary officials may soon ask the province to allow secondary suites in Inglewood.

Those developments currently aren't allowed because parts of the community are under a flight path to Calgary International Airport, meaning usefalls under a little known provincial regulation from the 1970s.

A city council committee voted Wednesday to ask the province to change that regulation, to allow secondary suites and other low-level developments.

The head of the airport authority, Garth Atkinson, has no problems with basement suites but says anything else could hamper the airport's future growth.

"We've just built facilities that will still be in use 50 years from now so it's very important for everyone, including city council and the province, to think very, very long term," he said.

Coun.Andre Chabot says boosting the population under a flight path is a sensitive topic but it's ultimately a provincial issue.

"Even though the aircraft are getting quieter, the number of complaints is not going to diminish," he said.

City council will debate later this month whether to ask the provincial government to change the regulation.
