Innisfail bombing accused briefly worked for Edmonton police

The man accused ofsending a bomb to an Innisfail, Alta., motherused to be a constable with Edmonton police, they confirmed Tuesday.

A FOIP spokesperson at Edmonton Police Service said Brian Malley, 55, was a constable with the force from October 1979 until May 1982.

The spokesperson said Malley was "dismissed."

Malley is charged with the first-degree murder of Vicky Shachtay, 23.

Shachtay died last November when a package sent to her home in Innisfail, north of Calgary, exploded.

Malley made his first court appearance Monday in Red Deer. He is also charged with causing an explosion likely to cause harm or death and sending an explosive device to a person.

RCMP do not believe Malley's one-time police experience can be linked to the murder charge.

Family membershave said thatMalley had beenacting as a financial adviser for Shachtay, who was living off $625,000 that she received as part of a court settlement after a 2004 car accident. The accident left her in a wheelchair.
