Lethbridge homicide victim identified as Irene Carter, 78

Police now say Irene Carter, found dead Sunday inside her home, was stabbed to death.

Lethbridge police confirmed a suspicious death as the city's first homicide of 2016.

Police nowsay the78-year-old woman who was found dead insideher home on Sunday was stabbed to death.

She has been identified as Irene Carter.

The death was initially beingtreated as suspicious until an autopsy confirmed it as a homicide.

Police first responded to Carter's home in the 300 block of Normandy Road Southshortly after 2 p.m. on Sunday,after family members who were unable to reach her on the phone went to the house and discovered her body.

Investigators are still trying to sort out the series of events that led to Carter's death.
