High-risk offender James Parent re-arrested in Calgary days after release
Subject of special police warning taken into custody as a result of a Canada-wide warrant
Calgary police say high-risk offenderJames Alexander Parent has been arrested againless than a week after they issued a public notice about his releaseinto a Calgary neighbourhood.
Parent was arrested Thursdayin the city's downtown area as a result of aCanada-widewarrant, police said.
The warrant was issued the same dayby Correctional Services of Canada (CSC)to suspend Parent's statutory release.
CSC spokesmanJeff Campbell wouldn't say what led to the warrant.
"The details of what prompted James Parent's arrest fall under the Privacy Act, so I am unable to provide those details," he said in an email to CBC News.
Parent had been released fromBowdenInstitution after serving a sentence for sexual assault causing bodily harm, disguise with intent, unlawful confinement, break and enter, uttering threats and mischief.
He also has past convictions for a violent sexual assault in 1987 and sexual offences against a child.
Police issued a special warning about his release on Aug. 5, an action they sometimes take withhigh-risk offenders.
Police said it's a matter of balancing public safety with privacy issues and warnedagainst any sort of vigilante action.
