Lethbridge police probe second homicide in 3 weeks

Lethbridge police are investigating a sudden death in the citys west end in what is now the city's second homicide of 2016.

Lethbridge police are investigating the city's second homicide of 2016after thesudden suspicious death of a 56-year-old woman in the city's west end.

The bodywas discovered on Sunday in an apartment building in the 100 block of Columbia Boulevard West, according to reports.

Around 5:15 p.m. that evening, police and EMS responded to a report of a severely injured female in theapartment complex. Shortly after locating the woman, emergency responders pronounced her dead.

Several people from the apartment were subsequently detained for questioning and a search of the area was conducted by the K9 Unit.

No link to earlier homicide, police say

The homicide investigation is still in its early stages and police remain on scene, but there is not any riskto neighbours or the general public, according to officials.

Police also have no evidence to support community speculation that this incident isrelated to thehomicideof 78-year-old Irene Carter in January.

Investigation into the Carterhomicideis still ongoing, but police will not provide any additional details at this time.

An autopsy will be scheduled in the coming days to confirm the cause of death in this latest homicide.

At this time, the identity of the victim is being withheld pending the notification of her next of kin.
