A southern Alberta man has been sentenced to eight years in prison for fatally beating his wife.

Rodney Yellow Old Woman, who is 53, had been charged with second-degree murder but pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

Court heard he punched and kicked his wife, Trixie Chief Moon, last September as she lay unconscious in a downtown Lethbridge parking lot.

She died later in hospital of her injuries.

He told police he was trying to wake her up.
