2 injured in high-speed road rage incident on city streets in Lethbridge

Lethbridge police are looking for an SUV involved in a possible road rage incident that followed a high-speed race between two drivers. The other vehicle jumped a median into oncoming traffic and rolled, injuring two people.

Lethbridge police are looking for an SUV involved in an alleged road rage incident that followed a high-speed race between two drivers.

The other vehicle crossed a cement median into oncoming traffic and rolled, injuring two people.

First responders arrived at a collision on Fifth Avenue North, just east of Stafford Drive, around 6:30 p.m. on March 10, police said in a release Tuesday.

"Investigation determined a 19-year-old driver was northbound on Stafford Drive in the area of First Avenue South when he became involved in a road rage incident with an unknown driver in a lighter colour SUV," police said.

"Both vehicles were travelling at a high rate of speed witnesses estimated upwardof 100 kilometres per hour."

The 19-year-old, now identified as Aren Benjamin Lee Verwer of Lethbridge, is thought to have cut off the other driver to make a right turn onto Fifth Avenue North. He lost control of his vehicle, which then jumped the median and struck another vehicle, leaving both drivers injured.

Verwer's vehicle fully rolled over before coming to rest, police said.

He isscheduled to appear in court April 29 to face charges ofdangerous operation of a motor vehicle.

Police want to talk to the driver of the lighter colour SUV involved in the initial high-speed race and released a security camera screenshot of the vehicle Tuesday.
