Loverboy could cash in on Top Gun vinyl soundtrack re-release

Amazon isreissuingsome of the biggest movie soundtracks of the '80s on vinyl on Friday includingDirty Dancing, Footloose, TheGoonies, RockyIV and Top Gun.

The latterfeatures the hit song Heaven InYour Eyesby Loverboy.

Lead singer Mike Reno says his band was selling "millions and millions of records"when he was approached by Paramount Pictures about collaborating on the 1986 film.

"They were picking rock bands to be in the soundtrack, [so] it was a pretty natural," said Reno, who formed the band in Calgary in the late '70s.

He says producers Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer invited him to their Hollywood office and gave him three days to write to a song for the film.

"After watching it, I knew it was going to be huge," said Reno about the Tom Cruise blockbuster.

Amazonwould not disclose how many Top Gun vinyl albums the company is pressing for the release, anddeclined an interview with the CBC.

Reno says he wouldn't be surprised if the company initially printed 30,000, butisn't fussed about what happens with sales.

"I never do anything for money," he said.

"When I heard they were re-releasing the vinyl I felt it was a compliment, it just made me feel warm and fuzzy."

However, Reno does say he has made "a lot of money" in the 29 years since theTop Gun soundtrack was released.

"The album originally sold 27 million copies," said Reno. "I still get cheques for it. It's called mailbox money everybody in the music business loves it."

As for what's next forLoverboy, the Canadian rockers playthe Grey CupFestival concertseries onNov. 28 in Winnipegalong withspecial guests 54-40 and Queen City Kids.
