Lower deck of Calgary's Centre Street Bridge closing for upgrades until June

The railing on the lower deck will be replaced and heightened for pedestriansand cyclists to use. There will also be new screens installed above the concrete arches on the underside of the structure.

The Lower deck ofCentre Street Bridge will be closed for renovations from Feb.28 until June 2022.

The city has budgeted $1.5 million to upgrade the bridge, which was built in 1916.

In a release, the City of Calgary said the upgrades are "to allow a safe and efficient crossing for vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists."

The railing on the lower deck will be replaced and heightened for pedestriansand cyclists to use. There will also be new screens installed above the concrete arches on the underside of the structure.

The bridge, which crosses the Bow River to connect Memorial Drive to Riverfront Avenue, will not be accessible to vehicles, pedestrians or cyclists duringconstruction.

Cyclists coming from the south side of the bridge can detour via ThirdAvenue heading west. To get across the river, there is a crossing at Second Street S.W.
