A Calgary man faces a murder charge following what police describe as an unprovoked attack on a stranger in city's southeastearlier this week.

Police were called Monday shortly after 8 p.m. to the area of 22nd Avenue and 17th Street S.E., after a passerby found a man unconscious on the ground.

The injured man, believed to be in his 30s,was taken to hospital but died. An autopsy later determined the as-yet-unidentified man was the victim of a homicide.

"The nature of the injuries that the victim sustained would not allow us to do a physical identification. Therefore we're going to be relying on dental and medical records," said acting Staff Sgt. Rick Tuza.

Police said Wednesday Darrin Thomas Amond, 30, of Calgary, has been charged with one count of second-degree murder. A second man has been arrested, but no charges have been laid.

"Based on the information that we have this was a random, unprovoked attack. It's a very rare occurance in Calgary. I really don't want to panic the public. It is a rare incident, but it happens."

The investigation is ongoing and investigators are urging anyone who mayhave information about thisto contact police.
