Calgary man charged after ingesting 342 grams of suspected opium

A 48-year-old Calgary man is facing charges after ingesting more than 340 grams of suspected opium last month, Canadian Border Services Agency said in a release Wednesday.

A CBSA spokesperson said it's a risky thing to do.

"No matter how well narcotics are wrapped, concealing internally is an extremely dangerous practice for the carrier," said Kim Scoville, the agency's Prairie director general.

"This seizure certainly contributed to the safety of Calgary communities, but may have also minimized harm to the drug carrier."

The man was apprehended at the Calgary airport Nov. 24.The drugs were handed over to RCMP after they were expelled.

The man has been charged with narcotic importing and possession for the purpose of trafficking and will appear in court Jan. 27.
