Man in critical condition following N.E. Calgary crash

A man is in critical condition in Foothills hospital after a three-vehicle crash in Calgary's northeast Saturday afternoon.

A man isin critical conditionin Foothills hospital but is expected to surviveafter a three-vehicle crash in Calgary's northeast Saturday afternoon.

The driver was trapped inside his2001 Volkswagen Jettaafter it was T-boned by a 2002Ford Explorer that ran a red lightin the intersection of Madigan Drive and 52nd Street around 2 p.m. MT, according to police.

The 33-year-old man was crushed from the waist down and had to be extricated by the fire department.

He was taken to hospital where he underwent surgery.

After the first crash a third vehicle rear-ended the Explorer. The driver of that carfled the scene and pulled into a nearby parking lot.

Witnessestold police he tossed a bottle of liquorfrom his1998 Nissan Altima. The 46-year-old manwaslater taken into custody by police and has been handed a driving suspension, 48-hour roadside suspension and charged with driving without insurance.

The 48-year-old female driver of theFord Explorerwas taken to hospital, and was under police escortwhile she was being treated for minor injuries.

Police said she failed a roadside breath test and has been charged with impaired driving, impaired driving causing bodily harm and refusing to provide a blood sample.

The intersection of Madigan Drive and 52nd Street northeast was temporarily closed to traffic for a large part of the afternoon.
