Calgary police say both the woman injured and the man killed by police Friday night had been involved in a similar incident just last year.

CBC sources have confirmed the Alberta Serious Incident Response Team was called in after police shot Jason Gary Roy, 34, and Ashley Jennifer Silver, 26, on Friday night. Police Chief Rick Hanson says the two people were very well known to police.

"We are very much aware that these individuals have been involved in a great deal of criminal activity," he said.

At roughly 9:15 p.m. on Feb. 28, officers had responded to a call of shots being fired in the 1400 block of Copperfield Boulevard S.E. They were alerted to a suspicious vehicle in the same area and followed it towardDeerfoot Trail and McKenzie Lake Boulevard S.E.

Police say the victims were driving very erratically, including going up on sidewalks and going the wrong way on DeerfootTrail.

Officers boxed them in and the driver tried to ram police with the stolen vehicle. Two tactical team officers fired more than 15 shots, killing the man and sending the woman to hospital in critical condition.

Hanson says the woman was shot because she took actions that demonstrated intention to harm, and that her injuries were not accidental.

The two officers have 12 and 18 years of experience with the Calgary Police Service and one was involved in a fatal shooting two years ago.

No officers were injured Friday.

Southbound traffic on Deerfoot Trail was being diverted at McKenzie Towne but has since re-opened.
