Calgary police make arrest in Marlborough Mall carjacking

A 31-year-old man has been charged in a carjacking at Marlborough Mall last week, after a would-be thief hopped into an idling vehicle with a woman and children inside and drove away.

Police say woman was still inside vehicle with her children when suspect jumped in and drove off

Calgary police have arrested a man in relation to a carjacking last week in which an idling vehicle was taken from MarlboroughMallwith a woman and children still inside.

AdrianPiotr Gembal, 31, of no fixed address, has been charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000 and theft of a motor vehicle, police said Tuesday.

The carjacking happenedaround 4:20 p.m. on Dec. 14, when a man parked in front of the mall and went inside a restaurant, leaving his wife and children inside the vehicle, according to police.

The carjackerthen opened the driver's side door, got in the vehicle and drove away.

The woman pleaded with the carjacker to stop, while also calling 911.

Hestopped a short while later and got out of the car outside of the mall's nearby Walmartand fled in a stolen Mazda 3S, police said.

Police believe the carjackerarrived at the mall with another man in the Mazda, which wasstolen from the nearby residential community of Marlborough after it was left parked with the keys inside.

Gembal is due in court Tuesday.
