Maurice Price apologizes for 'repugnant' Michael Sam tweets

Calgary Stampeders receiver Maurice Price has apologized for tweets he sent last month about Michael Sam, the first openly gay player to be drafted in the NFL.

Price was fined an undisclosed amount by the CFLfor the comments about the NFL's St. Louis Rams draft pick. He later deleted the tweets, which said, "My faith won't let me accept what took place over the weekend. Sorry, not sorry! #AdamAndEve#NotAdamAndAdam."

Sam came out in media interviews earlier this year and was selected in the seventh and final round of the draft.

The Stampedersquickly condemned Price's tweets and said the matter would be dealt with internally.

In a statement issued June 1, Price apologized for his comments and said he would do better in future.

"I apologize for the insensitive remarks I made on social media last month," the statement reads. "I realize my comments were offensive and I sincerely apologize to the Canadian Football League, the Calgary Stampeders, my fans and especially to Michael Sam. I promise to represent the values of the Canadian Football League and the Calgary Stampeders in the future."

Price, an African-American athlete who was born in Orlando, Fla., has played the last two seasons in Calgary.

He wasn't the only footballplayer to get in trouble for tweeting about Michael Sam.

A negative one-word tweet from NFL Miami Dolphins safety Don Jones about the drafting drew a rebuke from the team.

Shortly after the St. Louis Rams selected Sam, Jones tweeted, "Horrible."

The tweet was taken down a short time later.
