Meth-laced greeting cards make it into Medicine Hat remand centre

Giving an inmate a cake with a file in it is so clich,sohow about a greeting card laced with meth?

A joint investigation by the Medicine Hat Remand Centre and Alberta Serious Incident Response Team found Christmas cards laced with a liquid form of methamphetamine delivered to an inmate last Christmas.

Lab and DNA analysis allowed the investigation to identify the suspects. It's believed the meth was intended to be extracted by inmates.

Two people have been charged withtraffickinga 32-year-old man from Medicine Hat and a 25-year-old currently serving time in Saskatchewan on an unrelated matter.

"A great deal of sophistication was employed in a case like this, and I have to credit the investigative team for their tenacity in pursuing these drug dealers," Staff Sgt. Jason Graham said.

One of the cards, from the SpongeBob SquarePants collection, says "Guess what's inside for you?"

Police are asking members of the public who think this might be happening, to contact local police or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477.
