GreenTRIP program has Alberta communities applying for $415M in transit funds

Municipalities in southern Alberta are being asked to apply for millions in transit funding from the province's GreenTRIP program.

The Green Transit Incentives Program provides one-time funding to municipalities with an aim oftaking more cars off the roads to benefit the environment.

"Our population has been booming. Even in the downtown we're still building 200 houses in Okotoks this year," Okotoks Mayor Bill Robertson, who is the chair of the Calgary Regional Partnership, said at a funding announcement Thursday in Calgary.

"And certainly across many of our municipalities, growth is still happening. Of course, we want to protect the environment and transit will do that in particular."

A total of $415 million of the program's original $2 billion is still up for grabs for municipalities in the Calgary region, as well as rural municipalities.

Applications are being accepted until the end of June.
