A Calgary-based online business that's been selling an industrial disinfectant as a miracle tonic has been shut down by Health Canada.

Stan Nowak has been selling the Miracle Mineral Solutionalso known as MMSfor the past four years.

The product contains the chemical sodium chlorite and Nowak says it's able to cure diseases like diabetes, arthritis and cancer.

But Health Canada says the chemical is not fit for human consumption and is only authorized for use as a germicide for veterinarians or as a disinfectant.

"The ingestion of water treated with this MMS solution has been associated with four adverse reactions in Canada, including one life-threatening reaction," said Gary Holub of the federal health department.

Nowak says he has stopped selling the product.
