Parks Canada and RCMP have recovered the body of a missing hiker in Banff National Park.

The 54-year-old Massachusettsman and his hiking partner had been heading towards the summit of Parker Ridge near the Columbia Icefield when his hiking partner became tired and turned around. The victim continued towards the summit, intending to finish the hike, but then did not return to meet his partner at their vehicle.

The incident was reported at 4:50 p.m. MT Sunday and Parks Canada launched a search involving ground, canine and helicopter crews.

Crews resumed their search Monday morning and the missing hiker's body was located just after 10 a.m. off the Icefields Parkway.

The RCMP and the medical examiner's office are still investigating the cause of death, but foul play has been ruled out.
