A 39-year-old man is dead after two motorcycles were involved in acollision on Deerfoot Trail on Saturday morning, Calgary police said.

The accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. near theCalf Robe Bridge, police said.

Police say they believe the victim was riding his motorcycle in the middle lane traveling southbound on Deerfoot Trail when he braked sharply in response to slowing traffic.

As a result, the man lost control of the motorcycle and it fell over onto its right side, partially entering into the far-right lane, police said in a statement.

According to police, the victim was struck by another motorcycle driven by a 44-year-old man while attempting to pick up his own motorcycle and get back on it.

The 44-year-oldwas transported to hospital with minor injuries and has since been released. The 39-year-old victim was pronounced dead on scene.

Southbound Deerfoot Trail at Peigan Trail S.E., and Westbound Peigan Trail at Deerfoot Trail S.E., were closed earlier but have since reopened.

Police said neither excessive speed, alcohol nor drugs are believed to be factors in this collision.

The Calgary Police Service Traffic Section continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Anyone who may have information or dashcam footage of this incident is asked to contact police at the non-emergency number at 403-266-1234.
