Mysterious package killed Alberta mother

Police now confirm it was a package delivered to a young mother in Alberta Friday that exploded and killed her.

Police confirmed Saturdayit was a package delivered to a young mother in Alberta that exploded and killed her.

As police continue to comb for evidence after the fatal explosionin an apartment building in Innisfail, its left the entire community baffled and in shock.

Shachtay was a quadriplegic who used a wheelchair following a car accident several years ago.

Friends describe her as funny and devoted to her church.

"Such a wonderful woman, good mother," said her pastor Dave Wiebe of the Innisfail Alliance Church.

When the explosion happened at around 9 a.m. Friday, Shachtay was home with her 30-year-old caregiver. That woman suffered minor injuries.

Explosives experts from Edmonton and Ottawa are now investigating. RCMP say a parcel delivered to the door that morning caused the explosion.

"The package just showed up at the house," said Sgt. Patrick Webb. "As for how it got there, if someone dropped it off, all aspects of delivery are being looked into."

Now police are warning all residents to be careful if they receive any suspicious, unexpected packages.

Innisfail Mayor Jim Romane said safety should be at the front of everyones minds now.

The explosion has left this tight-knit community of about 8,000 people on edge.

"Thats just crazy," said local resident Kyla Golem. "Especially in a small town like this you wouldnt expect it."

No funeral arrangements have yet been announced for Shachtay. Her daughter is now with family.
