New leads sought in 2008 slaying

Police are now revealing that a Calgary man was shot twice in his SUV before his killer fled in a vehicle, in the hopes of solving the 2008 slaying.

Juan Carlos Dequina, 22, was found dead in his black Chevrolet Blazer on an isolated gravel road near the intersection of 53rd Street and 146th Avenue N.W. on Dec. 14, 2008.

Crime Stoppers filmed a re-enactment on Tuesday in the hopes the segment will bring investigators new tips in the case.

Investigators believe Dequina picked up at least two people after he left his girlfriend's house in northwest Calgary, and was followed by another vehicle to the location where he died.

Dequina was shot twice from inside the SUV as he sat in the driver's seat, revealed Staff Sgt. Rick Tuza on Tuesday. The suspects fled in the second vehicle.

Tuza said police are looking for people who may have been told about the shootingby the suspects.

"I am quite certain that the people that are responsible would have shared that information with a close associate," said Tuza.

"As time passes those associates may disappear from their original friendships and then they tend to share that information. I can tell (you) almost every investigation is like that as time passes."

Investigators have ruled out robbery as well as drug or gang ties, but are stumped for a motive. Tuza described Dequina as an innocent victim.

"[Dequina] was a good kid. He was working," Tuza told reporters on Tuesday. "He'd gone to school. He lived with his family. He made charitable contributions. He was a good fine young man. You know, he's a pillar in the community."

"A motive is difficult to determine when you're dealing with such a good person."
