A former Calgary guidance counsellor charged with sexual assault has been given a two-year conditional sentence.

Fred Henry Archer, 64, was sentenced on Tuesday when a charge of gross indecency was also withdrawn.

Archer was arrested in October 2008 after an investigation into sexual assault allegations dating back to 1985.

A man told police he was sexually assaulted when he was a Grade 8 student at Springbank Middle School, west of Calgary.

Archer had worked at a number of other Calgary-area schools, most recently at the Calgary Science School.
